We missed it on PS4, but it all looks rather soothing and beautiful. As you can see from the trailer above, there's plenty of puzzles, ancient civilisations and glowing sigils to enjoy as you explore the tundra. In your travels you come across the foxiest of ladies - a female spirit fox - who also happens to be the guardian of the Northern Lights. That said, Spirit of the North is too beautiful and captivating to be disappointed for long. Those brand new help cards on the PlayStation 5 dashboard sure would have been nice (fingers crossed we see those when the game officially releases). An added bonus here are the skin rewards. This literal fetch quest not only provides some adorable fox carrying big stick pictures but is a great way to appreciate all the nooks and crannies. When I finally did, I let the fox curl up into a ball while I paused the game and walked away for a good ten minutes. I’d always seem to reach the goal with only a couple of seconds and never get the Bark release to succeed. Where this really became an issue was a puzzle in which I had to dash in spirit form to a target and then hold Circle to clear the object. After a few times of not holding it long enough, I now keep it pressed for at least thirty seconds (yes, I count them in my head). My issue here is that there is no real indicator as to how long to hold Circle. The Spirit Bark asks the player to hold down Circle until the energy releases to clear certain obstructions. Special spirit abilities have been a little touchy for me. New elements are introduced over time, such as collecting essence to light stones. Many of the puzzles are easily solved by paying attention to the environment or following the spirit guide. Puzzle solving in this game can be a little hit or miss. Need to solve an obelisk puzzle by rotating panels? Bark. Want to collect essence from some blooming flowers? Bark. Neither my fox nor the guide prattle on with needless words when necessary, all I need to do is bark. A large part of Spirit of the North‘s strength is in that very fact. In fact, sometimes I absolutely love not having a voice chattering on and telling me what to do.
